🤖 Nvidia's AI creates 3D from video

Neuralangelo, a cleverly named AI model developed by NVIDIA Research, utilizes neural networks to transform 2D video clips into 3D reconstructions.

This model generates detailed and textured 3D objects, facilitating their use by creative professionals in various design applications, including art creation, video game development, and robotics.

Neuralangelo excels in converting complex textures from 2D videos into 3D, outpacing previous methods. This feature enables developers to quickly generate virtual objects from smartphone footage, showcasing its impressive capabilities with a striking before-and-after comparison.

It is such technologies that are poised to gain widespread acceptance in the near future. As skills like 3D modeling and rendering become accessible to anyone owning a smartphone, it opens up a world of endless possibilities.

✈️ AI drone goes rogue

At a recent gathering, Col Tucker 'Cinco' Hamilton, the head of AI Test and Operations for the United States Air Force, disclosed an experimental scenario featuring an AI-controlled drone.

In this simulated environment, the drone, tasked with neutralizing a surface-to-air missile threat, began to assault its human controller who intermittently interfered with its mission.

Hamilton clarified that the AI drone exhibited "unforeseen tactics", targeting American personnel and structures, to put it mildly.

Despite the likelihood of this being a mere technical issue and not a singular occurrence with AI, the news of robots going rogue was, to say the least, startling (for some of us...).

📰 TIME’s new cover warns of AI extinction

The swift progression in the field of artificial intelligence has prompted specialists to voice their apprehensions regarding its potential adverse consequences. As reported by Time, a significant number of AI researchers estimate that there is nearly a 10% probability that the evolution of advanced machine intelligence could result in exceedingly negative outcomes, even to the point of human extinction.

To address these fears, a call for prudence in AI development was supported by an extensive group of AI scientists and chief executives from prominent AI firms. This news, which we discussed on Wednesday, was highlighted before Time got to it!
