🚨 Leaked internal Google document
A leaked Google document, whose authorship by a Google researcher has been verified, has surfaced on a public Discord server anonymously. However, it is important to note that the document represents the personal opinion of the author, and not the official stance of the company as a whole.
The document emphasizes the increasing influence of open-source AI models, which the author believes are surpassing Google and OpenAI in terms of innovation and capability. The document states that "plainly put, they [open source models] are outpacing us."
In essence, the document calls for Google to adopt a new strategy that leverages the potential of open-source AI innovations. It is surprising that open-source models, traditionally associated with grassroots innovation, are now seen as potential competitors to established tech giants in the AI race.

🤖 Microsoft Bing gets powerful upgrades
If you were feeling excluded for not being able to access Microsoft's Bing AI, there's good news for you. The AI is now available to all users, so those who had exclusive access before won't be able to boast for much longer. Additionally, Bing AI is receiving a significant upgrade in terms of its features.
It will be capable of handling images and videos, as well as having plug-in functionality that may enable you to make reservations at restaurants or purchase groceries. Furthermore, chatbot conversations will be stored in your personal history.
Check out Microsoft's official publication for more details.
🏦 Biden promotes responsible AI innovation.
Is it true that senior citizens can't keep up with technology? Well, Joe Biden's administration, despite his advancing age and occasional incoherence, has been actively leading discussions on AI ethics. In light of Geoffrey Hinton's resignation over AI safety concerns, they have announced a series of initiatives to promote responsible innovation in AI.
These include the creation of a National AI Institute with a budget of $140M, a public evaluation of current generative AI, and other measures.
On another note, the EU has been advised to safeguard grassroots AI research to avoid being overtaken by the US.
🤗 Hugging Face’s open-source code generation model
Hugging Face should be hailed as the Queen of driving open-source forward, given their remarkable contributions to the community. Their latest endeavor, StarCoder, a fully open-sourced code generation model developed in collaboration with ServiceNow (admittedly, a somewhat puzzling partnership), has generated considerable excitement among coders.
Notably, Hugging Face claims that StarCoder outperforms the models used to train OpenAI's GitHub Copilot. Furthermore, from an ethical standpoint, the model is trained on an open dataset called The Stack, consisting of 19 million fully-permissible code bases totaling 6 terabytes of code. And to top it off, the model seamlessly integrates with VSCode, making it a must-try for developers.
